“Is the spring coming?” he said. “What is it like?”
“It is the sun shining on the rain and the rain falling on the sunshine.”
― Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden
It was a rainy spring day in Tokyo with newlyweds Tim and Karen. They’ve just recently gotten married and were in Japan for their honeymoon. We love shooting couples on their honeymoons, when they’re still on a high from the wedding day and so very madly in love, which is exactly what these two lovebirds are. Jeff said it’s almost as if they didn’t even notice the rain.
We’ve shot an autumn Day After session in Kyoto before, and the contrast is stunning. Both are breathtaking in their own ways. Autumn feels more moody, and darkly beautiful, like a Neruda poem that comes to mind: “I love you as certain dark things are to be loved, in secret, between the shadow and the soul.” It’s earthy and intimate and visceral. But spring, ah, spring is a promise. Spring is delicate, young, and playful. It’s a growing radiant warmth inside, much like falling in love. It is nothing short of magical.
